Maintenace

Maintenance on your astro turf or artifical grass is essential. All artificial playing surfaces require maintenance. To maximise the best performance and long life of your artificial surface, which could be rugby pitches, football pitches, tennis courts, childrens play areas, hockey pitches, a regular deep clean programme is essential.

This is a totally different operation to the fortnightly brushing you probably do now. Without a regular deep clean you will experience drainage problems cause by compacted infill and poor infill distribution. This leads to pitches wearing out before there time, which in turn causes significant financial implications to try and bring the surface back to its optimum playing potential. Some companies may offer a ‘power brush’ but please do not confuse this with a deep clean.

What surface needs a deep clean?

1 All sand filled multi purpose pitches.
2 All sand dressed multi purpose pitches.
3 All 3rd generation pitches.
4 All 4th generation pitches.

Why a deep clean is necessary

Over time, the sand becomes compressed and compacted, creating a hard layer that is impenetrable, this also applies to rubber crumb granules.

Surface water cannot drain away, which leads to flooding and a slippery and uncomfortable playing surface.

The infill is a major part of the surface. Without the infill the ‘carpet’ will lie down flat, therefore, in theory you would be playing on the sides of the fibres which causes:-

1 The surface to wear down twice as fast
2 Drastically reduces the springy effect of the surface
3 The surface becomes slippery

The purpose of the deep clean

To get rid of the compaction which has occurred over time due to the repeated usage
The fibres over a period of time will begin to lie down and need to be straightened back up to their original form. This is prevent you playing on the sides of the fibres, which in turn stops the ‘carpet’ wearing out faster than necessary.
Loose fibres which occur during normal usage need to be removed to prevent drainage issues.
To prolong the life of the ‘carpet’ debris, stones, glass, hair clips etc all need to be removed to prevent them working down into the carpet causing damage to the backing, which eventually will tear. Removal of such foreign bodies can eliminate unnecessary injuries.
If sieving and cleaning of the infills is not carried out there will be the need to completely remove all the infill and replace with new, therefore major financial implications will occur. Even with new infill installed a deep cleaning will still need to be carried out to prevent compaction, which is the main cause of surfaces being shut down and out of action.

How the deep clean is carried out

The equipment I use is a purpose built, self propelled machine (PG210). The polypropalene brushes reach down into the carpet and lift the granular infill, which is then deposited on adjustable sieves.

The material is then mechanically sifted. Any foreign bodies are separated and drawn into a skip via a powerful turbine fan.

The next process is to ‘drag brush’ the infill evenly and gently back into the carpet, leaving a player friendly soft surface.

In the event of excessive moss or algae, the areas will be treated with appropriate weed killers followed by a deep clean to remove contaminates, thus preventing the need to remove all infills and replace with new. As stated earlier this would be a costly expenditure.

It stays secure to the surface it is painted onto for longer periods of time, therefore removing the need for more regular applications. This specialised paint can be acquired in any colour to suit your requirements.
